Exploring the Richness of Mangrove Habitats: A Field Trip to Mai Po
Date: 26/03/2025
On 26th March 2025, 22 S5 Biology students and 3 Biology teachers went on a field trip to the Mai Po Inner Deep Bay Ramsar Site to study the mangrove habitat in Hong Kong. As we walked deeper into the site, we closely observed the mangroves, including Kandelia obovata and Heritiera littoralis, which were rooted along the river channels. Their hypocotyls dropped and inserted into the muddy soil. Various egrets flew over the channel, while diligent ducks swam in the ponds.
The most impressive part of the trip was passing by the floating boardwalk to reach Deep Bay. Spiny Bear's Breeches, with their purple blossoms, surrounded the wavering boardwalk, making it particularly attractive. Additionally, we were surprised to see a huge python lying on the grass, sunbathing.
From this field trip, I learned that wetlands and mangrove habitats are vital to both the environment and human society. Therefore, we should help protect these essential ecosystems.
